— A Pakistani Taliban commander in South Waziristan accuses the lamestream media of bias in its coverage of the Malala shooting. Right then. (via newsweek)
I heard a Pakistani civilian on NPR today ask: Why do we give so much more coverage to one girl than to the many civilians that have been killed by U.S. drone strikes? I think that’s an extremely fair question, and one that we’re purposefully ignoring. The answer is all in intent and goals of violence. Drone strikes are targeting the very type of man who targets Malala. The fact that civilians are victims, too, is very unfortunate, very unfair, and we don’t talk about it. Why not? Malala would want us to question every act of violence and recognize our biases. (To be clear: The Taliban are evil. Aiming at Malala is evil. I’m not agreeing with the Taliban. I think we’re just avoiding using real logic. The Taliban is also proving to be terrible communicators and leaders for not even pointing out our logical fallacy correctly.)
